I've only read the first book in Turtledove's Hellenic Traders series. I enjoyed it but forgot to continue with the series. I'm into fantasy fiction myself but I usually stick to sword-and-sorcery fantasy (Terry Goodkind, Robert E. Howard) or urban fantasy (Jim Butcher, Seanan McGuire).

The Garbage 1 PBR Serve cold. The Morrissey 1 bottle Buckfast Serve at room temperature. The Joy Division 2 oz. Vodka 2 oz. Lemon juice 1 bottle Schnapps Combine in shaker and strain into cocktail glass. Serve. Garnish with olive.

Sarah Silverman's autobiography, The Bedwetter. It has plenty of the raunchiness and edginess that Silverman is known for, but she also gets serious on several occasions. I find it a really enjoyable read so far!

I mostly enjoyed the book due to Palahniuk's descriptions and vision of Hell. The narrator had some great wisecracks too but the repetition of phrases such as "I may be such-and-such BUT . . ." or "Ms. Slutty Von VanderSluts" prevented me from truly enjoying her as a character. Normally I'm fine...

That would be The Mist, which is the introductory tale to Skeleton Crew. It's still my favorite King collection :). Good pick!

Now I really want to know what book this is. Let's see: there was a time where I would finish a book regardless of how I felt about the quality of writing or story structure. These days, I have less of a problem putting down a book I don't connect with. Just too many books lying around...

Gabriel, I'm glad you can admit your writing is "simple".

Jacqueline Susann-Valley of the Dolls I can understand why this book was so controversial in the 60's, with the characters casually discussing sex, drug use, and abortion. While I raised my brow at a few moments, the novel probably won't shock modern-day readers. It was an entertaining read though.

Conquest. A baffling swords-and-sorcery film from horror maestro Lucio Fulci. Utterly no character development or sense of place whatsoever. Still, heads do get bashed in and limbs get torn apart. So there's that.

Snow White and the Huntsman. Charlize Theron overacts, while Kristen Stewart plays Kristen Stewart with a British accent. Still, it looks great on the big screen.

Good read, although I got the impression people expected Battleship to flop. Even though John Carter was woefully marketed, at least that had something of a chance.

The June selection got a few votes, no? I'd prefer to keep the June discussion and take a break for the rest of the summer.

Well, some people criticized the book for similar reasons as E.L. James' beloved Twilight: misogyny and glorification of an abusive relationship. I also heard the sex scenes weren't really tantalizing or provocative. From the excerpts I did read, I'll have to agree with those people.
