I think you could advance your thesis with "Cold Mountain" by Charles Frazier. Although the main characters were southerners, the book, (more so than the movie), showed how dehumanizing the war was for both sides.
I say "dehumanizing" because it showed how ordinary people on both sides behaved...
I guess I would go with East of Eden as my favorite, although I love a lot of his books.
He also wrote a poem about one of his teachers, which I also love. It's called Like Captured Fireflies. I don't know if it's copyrighted, but I found this copy of it by doing a Google (see link below)...
Thanks for your help. I suddenly remembered that her nickname was Birdy because she liked birds. So I did a google and found the book. It is Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman and was a Newberry Honor book.

I can't remember the name of a book and wondered if anyone can help me. My impression is that it is a children's/young adult book. It was about a girl who lived in England when it was ruled by a Roman Catholic king (or queen). She was promised by her oafish father to a hideous older man...
