I saw Children of Men as well. One of the best films I've seen in a long time. I actually liked the ending - I was thinking right up until the end it's obvious what's going to happen, he'll just give us a simplistic happy ending etc. But that never happened.

Scott Lynch: The Lies Of Locke Lamora

He seems to be - he's aiming to get one book published a year, which means writing each one in 8 months. He already has put some excerpts from the next book up on his blog.

Scott Lynch: The Lies Of Locke Lamora

I loved the Lies of Locke Lamora - my favourite 2006 release. Scott Lynch is both very good at humour and at powerful emotive moments. The best way I can think to describe the book is that it's fun, but it also has a lot of serious elements to it and Lynch is willing to do the unpredictable and...

Favorite TV show of all time

Firefly - it has everything I want from a TV show. Well developed characters, brilliant writing, brilliant acting, comedy, emotion - a science fiction TV show that's about the ordinary people in a very original setting. There was no excuse for Fox cancelling it so early on after they had...

    On a fantasy kick

I'll just echo what Direstraits said - most of those authors you got are pretty average generic fantasy, but can be enjoyable. But George RR Martin and Guy Gavriel Kay are two of the best authors in the subgenre.

    Best Science Fiction Films

I missed out two more that I certainly shouldn't haven't forgotten - Minority Report and Soylent Green - both excellent films.

    Firefly/Serenity

Both Serenity and Firefly were brilliant. Out of Gas and Ariel were my favourite episodes, though I enjoyed all of them a lot (though Heart of Gold was definitely the weakest).

    Goodkind Quotes

I've seen the discussion - up to Mystar's usual standards. I'll never forget "SHOW ME THE CONTRAVSRY". He's arguing an absolutely idiotic position (there is no controversy about Goodkind - completely different matter to whether Goodkind's a good author), while the others are being entirely...

    Goodkind Quotes

He claims to be a personal friend of Goodkind (and I have no reason to doubt that), but he's one of the most extreme Goodkind fans there are. If he turns up, don't expect rational argument. His comments almost equal Goodkind's, eg "90% of Europeans want to live in America". That poll is...

    Goodkind Quotes

That comment about spies is worrying .... you could be right. Mystar's been going around every other forum with negative comments on Goodkind this last month and might turn up here. You've really been banned? It doesn't say so under your name on the forums, and I can't see any potential...

    Goodkind Quotes

It's entertaining at how they manage to completely miss the irony of that statement. Keep up the good work. I also like how they somehow think that you will find the books absolutely perfect - and not a single one disagrees. That last post of yours is classic - "The price you pay, I suppose, for...

    Goodkind Quotes

Perhaps we should start making bets on how long until Stewart gets banned. A week? That might be a bit optimistic - most other times people have gone there from other forums its been more in the region of a day. But so far they seem to have been reasonable. I think the next step is offering some...

    Dark Future Sci Fi Novels

A Scanner Darkly is one of my favourite science fiction books! Some of PKD's other novels probably have a similar tone, but I've only read a couple of his which aren't that similar in the future they portray. For some reason, these types of environments I can think of a lot more in fantasy than...

    Goodkind Quotes

Pretty much every other writer's forums I've seen have an other literature forum, and I don't really see why an author would have a problem with that. I think those forums probably attract the most objectionable and intolerant of Goodkind fans, which just creates a bad name for the other much...

    Goodkind Quotes

But you have to compare the few who have "had their lives changed by reading Goodkind" to the many who've suffered from his terrible writing, and then consider whether perhaps these people (excluding ardent objectivists) wouldn't have benefited more by reading a competent author. Those forums...

    Goodkind Quotes

It seems you've been unlucky - all of those you mentioned which I read I'd place towards the worst of fantasy - Irvine had some good ideas, but he ruined them through absolutely terrible writing and Eddings I found generally incompetent, but mildly entertaining.

    Goodkind Quotes

Just be pleased to know that almost all fantasy is a lot better than WFR. The only authors who I've heard are worse than Goodkind are Robert Newcomb and L Ron Hubbard. If you want a starting point, the various lists here are a good starting point: Speculative Reviews

Book suggestions similar to Serpent War saga, Riftwar Legacy etc by Raymond E. Feist

Actually it was more along the lines of "can anyone who has read that series recommend any other titles that are just as good if not better?", so he's enjoyed Feist but he wants other novels that are equally good or better - not the same. Erikson and Bakker both fall easily into the epic fantasy...

    Goodkind Quotes

I've seen these over at Westeros - the first one, on evil chickens is hilarious. The rape scene and the Princess Violet scene are sickening and disturbing, and I don't know why the editors ever allowed them to get through, and the noble goat scene is hilariously badly written. He does have a...
