    Hello (again)

Strictly speaking I'm not new, but I haven't logged in for almost six years. My name is David and I love non-fiction and fiction alike. Non-fiction I love popular science and weird books, like Jon Ronson's and books about UFOs and conspiracy theories. Fiction I love some classics, but...

Who is your favourite author, and why?

I have only recently discovered my favourite author - Haruki Murakami. I read 1Q84 and since have been hooked and currently reading my fifth of his, Kafka on the Shore. I can't really put my finger on what it is about him. His writing is very clear and simple but very clever at the same time. He...

    Virginia Woolf

I have given up on To The Lighthouse. I didn't read much of it, but finally when I came to realise what the hell was going on, I wasn't very interested. It gave the impression it was going to be quite depressing. I didn't like any of the characters much, apart from James, the young lad, and it's...

    Virginia Woolf

I'll persevere with To The Lighthouse I think. I only chose it as it was a top 100 title and I came across it in a charity shop. Also, coincidentally, we're going on holiday to Skye at Easter so I thought it might put me in the mood. I'll end up associating Skye with bad grammar and nonsense!

    Virginia Woolf

I started reading 'To The Lighthouse' the other day. Admittedly, I've only read the first few pages, but so far it seems completely incoherent. I haven't a clue what she's talking about and she just seems like a very bad writer, with little punctuation and far far too long sentences. Is it...

What do you use as a bookmark?

We've just had our 4 yo son's first school photos back, some of which were turned into bookmarks. So poking out of the top of whatever I'm reading is my son's beaming face! Encourages me to read more.

    Hello

Hi Olguta! Nice to see you here. I'm 34 and still can't single out an all time favourite book or even author. I find my tastes change from week to week. Welcome, anyway.

    Hello from Quidnunc

I've posted a few times but never introduced myself, so hello. My real name is David and I'm 34. I love everything about books and am often found crouched down in bookshops sniffing books by riffling the pages around my nose! I like fiction and non-fiction alike, my favourites from each...

What books have you read more than once?

There's very very few books I've re-read. This is because I see it as a sort of waste of a book, when I could have discovered a new one! I think it's also to do with the fact that I'm a very slow reader for a book lover so it seems like doubly a waste of time. However, I have read Lord of the...

BBC & Waterstones top 100 book project

A few months ago I downloaded onto excel the two top 100 books lists that we've had in the last 10 years. There's a lot of overlap but I think one is just 20th century. We have this longitudinal project to work our way through all 100! Since we embarked on it we must have found between 15-20...

John Kennedy Toole: A Confederacy Of Dunces

I found the same parts of the book laugh out loud funny. I'm still part way through it and can't wait to read it tonight. I think Ignatius is a brilliant literary character. For me he kind of represent the ID in all educated people. I can certainly relate to his reasoning a lot of the time.

    Elizabeth Kostova: The Historian

Sorry, have I broken some etiquette. I didn't see a Historian thread.

    Elizabeth Kostova: The Historian

Anyone read The Historian? I started The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova a few months ago but then got sidetracked by other books. I was quite enjoying the atmosphere of it but thought it a bit slow. I got to about page 130. Is it worth the extra 600 odd pages? I ask because I'm a slow reader...

    funniest lines in a book

I agree that the Hitch Hikers... series has some of the funniest lines in literature. My personal favourite is when Ford asks the Vogon guard whether he likes his job and he replies something like: Well, the hours are good, but come to think about it, most of the actual minutes are pretty...

    Worst or most disappointing book?

I started Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie, based on the fact that not only had it won the Booker prize, but the Booker of Booker prizes. I gave up on it but am sorely tempted to start again and persevere. I found it just so stodgy, like the literary equivalent of christmas cake. It was...

Where do you buy most of your books?

I like to trawl car boot slaes when I can and charity shops. If i buy new I like to support independent book stores, such as the wonderful 'Webberleys' in Stoke. Apart from the books I can spend an hour upstairs just sniffing the stationery.
