Friend of the Devil was great. I think you get more out of these books if you read them in order.
Yes, definitely read Aftermath before Friend of the Devil, which does tie up loose ends. Actually, I remembered very well the dramatic details of Aftermath while reading Friend although I'd...
Friend of the Devil, the latest Banks novel goes on sale here tomorrow. I have it reseved. Robinson is one of the few authors I buy in hard cover because I don't want to wait for the paperback.
I have read the whole Banks series. Obviously, I really enjoyed all of the books. In a Dry Season was my favorite with flashbacks from the present to the WWII homefront in Yorkshire. When I finished the series, I read Not Safe After Dark, which is a book of short stories by Robinson. Several...
For crime novels, I recommend anything by Harlan Coben, Stephen Booth, Peter Robinson or Tess Gerritsen. Booth & Robinson are English police novelists. Gerritsen's are medical thrillers. Also, Tony Hillerman's novel are good. They are about Navaho police in the American west.
I am also a fan of British police detectives in general and Robinson's books in particular. I read First Cut first. It is not part of the Banks series. Since then, I've been reading the series in order: Gallows View, A Dedicated Man, A Necessary End, and am now reading The Hanging Valley...
That makes sense. Being forced to watch something can certainly influence how you feel about it. Besides, if you've seen every episode 5 times, it isn't really funny anymore.
Yesterday, I went to a used book store and bought nine more John D. MacDonald paperback novels for less than $2.00 per book.
Today, I went back and bought:
The Name is Archer by Ross MacDonald
Love's Lovely Counterfeit, Seranade, and Double Indemnity all by James M. Cain and
Threshhold...
The Deep Blue Good-by by John D. MacDonald, the first book in the Travis McGee series which the late author began in the 60's. Private detective living on a houseboat in 60's Florida. The series is being reissued. I didn't read them the first time. I enjoyed the first one and will try another.

That was from The Deep Blue Good-by by John D MacDonald
When the sun rose high enough to clear the slate roofs on the other side of the street, it crept through a chink in Sally Lumb's curtains and lit on a strand of gold-blonde hair that curled over her cheek. - A Dedicated Man by Peter...
I am also a big Preston & Child fan. I have read almost everything they have written. I'd recommend Thunderhead if you haven't read it. It doesn't have Pendergast, but it is a great book.
I would also recommend novels by F. Paul Wilson and James Rollins.
I really enjoyed it. I also read his First Cut (alternate title: Caedmon's Song). It is not part of the Inspector Banks series, but is also set in Yorkshire.
I would also recommend the Cooper & Fry series by Stephen Booth which is set in Derbyshire. I'm really into English village...
