Nick Harkaway: The Gone Away World

I wouldn't class it as Fantasy, so much as 'alternate reality' really, the events in the book being represented as scientifically feasible rather than completely impossible. Parts of it are a bit 'out there', but it still smacks of the truths any good author/narrator can imbue a book with...

Nick Harkaway: The Gone Away World

I just wanted to post here about this (the debut) novel by Nick Harkaway, to say that it is superb, and see if anyone else had heard rumblings of it? I managed to get a proof copy through reviewing it, and it is truly a cracking read. If anyone wants to read a little about it, I've...

Anyone ever read two books at once?

I also (normally by accident, or because I'm stuck in a 'subject-minded' mix the day up mode from my school days), tend to have a couple on the bounce. Mix it up and all that, though it does occasionally mean that I get drawn from one book to another and leave the first bythe wayside...

    Best place to read

    On the Road by Kerouac

The book alone is not enough. I've had to do some background research on the whole group of beats; burroughs, cassady, ginsberg et al And man I love it all. So for the kicks. I've been missing this for nearly a whole quarter of a century and man I want to go on the road!:D

    Poetry?

Beautiful play on words silverseason :) Slightly aside, and in my opinion, poetry and drama are easily separated, and poetry neither begins nor ends with the so-called 'Bard'...and that's me being diplomatic

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Children Of Hurin

I received 'The Children of Hurin' for Christmas. Might be a little while before I get to it, but I'm excited to have it in my collection! :D

    Bill Bryson

Interesting point. I think most books benefit from knowing the authors voice, but that's a separate issue for another time perhaps. Bill Bryson is cracking and who could argue? 'Down Under' ('In a Sunburnt Country') is at points testing in keeping attention, but at other times some of the best...

What was the very last series you read?

The last series I full read was (the sublime) His Dark Materials. However, the last series I was engaged with was David Gemmell's heroic fantasy Troy series, the final book of which has just come out. The only trouble is that I@ve about four books I need to read first! :D

    Hello There

Hi, I'm Kev and this is exactly the sort of site I've been looking for. I'm a Staff-Writer on a computer mag, poet, amateur-philsopher and general 20-something. Now, how do I go about getting a Non-fiction section implemented? :D
