A Thousand Splendid Suns-depressing till end?

Please don't give me any spoilers, but I have a question aboutA Thousand Splendid Suns.

This is the follow-up to The Kite Runner, which I liked very much.

A Thousand Splendid Suns starts out very depressing. The Kite Runner had it's depressing moments, but it was redemptive--so I didn't find it depressing.

A Thousand Splendid Suns has a female protagonist, and the female lot was not a happy one in this part of the world and at this time. Perhaps this is what I'm reacting to.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me it won't be depressing throughout.

Thanks,
LIB

I guess it depends upon your definition of depressing and what you think is a happy ending. I guess it has some type of redeeming ending. Stick with it, you'll enjoy it!

Thanks n_maw. I don't require a happy ending. What I was finding depressing was the way Miriam had no control, whatsoever, over her life.
