Just read The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen. Very effective - creepy and disturbing. The action is all related by the characters - usually to other characters (if you read it you'll see why this is so effective in this case).
Actually, I read some of the Dracula thread this morning, and couldn't help comparing the two books; it's been some years since I read Dracula, but I remember getting a bit narked by the letters and diaries - I didn't like being so distanced from the action. The style didn't seem to add much to the story, in contrast to Machen's book which kept us at a distance for a reason.
Anyway, it's available on Project Gutenberg if you're interested; will only take a couple of hours to read.
