I really can't remember much, but I'm pretty sure it started out with the parents on the run from the KGB and their kid escapes and is picked up by a travelling circus. I can vaguely remember something to do with a lion.

The copy I had was a red hardback but missing the dust jacket and I think it was published early to mid 80's.
