For writers, reading groups, and people who host online author events: how do you decide what video quality is worth keeping for an event you recorded yourself, or otherwise have permission to download and archive?
For a straightforward interview or reading, 720p may preserve enough visual context if the audio is clear. I can see 1080p mattering more when the video includes illustrated pages, slides, handwritten workshop notes, cover details, or an on-screen Q&A. Even then, the resolution requested is not necessarily the resolution delivered.
My working checklist would be:
- confirm recording, download, and reuse permission before making a local copy
- note the resolution actually delivered, especially if a workflow falls back from 1080p to 720p, 480p, or 360p
- preview the entire MP4 for missing sections, audio/video sync, cropping, and compression artifacts
- keep the original recording or authorized source as the reference rather than treating a converted copy as a new master
- save event details, speaker names, book titles, dates, and permission notes separately
- capture a dedicated still or obtain the original slide when fine text or artwork matters
- move the checked file into managed storage because a temporary delivery link is not an archive
Lower resolution does not automatically make a recording unusable, and 1080p does not prove that small text, artwork, or edition details were captured accurately. The practical choice seems to depend on what readers will need to revisit later.
