The Clay Station
The large clean windows display
numerous pieces of pottery.
My favorite is
the high heeled shoe that depicts The Wizard of Oz.
The creaky screen door
announces your presence
as you step through the threshold.
Shelves line the store
bursting with ceramic pieces
from dogs and cats to plate and bowls.
Freshly washed paint brushes
of all shapes and sizes idle in a corner
Mimi’s soft-rock cd of the moment
plays softly under the constant chatter.
Emily’s spirit radiates throughout the store,
it was her favorite place.
Mimi gabs amicably
about anything and everything
with new customers and old friends.
Lynn is busy finalizing an oak tree
on her dinner plate,
adding texture and life
to the bark that covers its trunk.
Adam pours ten cups of light delft
for a birthday party full of giggling girls,
all painting ballerinas.
And I sit off to the side,
reminiscing my memories,
absorbing the present,
and pondering the future.
All while deciding
what will ornament
the pottery piece facing me.
