Enchantress Among the Stars- Mary Louise Engdahl

I recently finished this YA science fiction novel, and found it fascinating. The story is of a girl who was raised in a futuristic culture, and is studying a medieval culture that is coming into contact with another culture that iwishes to colonize and control these people, whom they see as "Savages". Of course, the girl isn't allowed to intervene, or change the progression of either culture's growth. So, she must work through a native, and stop each culture from destroying either the other, or themselves.

The book is deep compared to today's popular YA novels. It has many leveled characters, a unique plot, and a gripping story that adult and youth will enjoy.

Engdahl explores many, many themes, including the dividing mental factors between the cultures, one's duty in light of one's desire to help or love others, the danger of knowing things without understanding them, the inability of youth to truly understand the dangers of life, and so much more.

This book is highly recommended by influential YA authors like Madeline L'engle (Wrinkle In Time), Nancy Farmer (House of the Scorpion, Sea of Trolls) Ursula K. Leguin (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Left hand of Darkness), and Lois Lowry (The Giver).
