My 7-year old son and I started reading The Fran That Time Forgot. We love the Franny books by James (Jim) K. Benton:
Lunch Walks Among Us
Attack of the 50-Foot Cupid
The Invisible Fran
Frantastic Voyage (12/2005)

I recommend them for children in the 7-10 year-old range. Very funny with lots of pictures.

You might want to take a look at Bertrand R. Brinley's The Mad Scientists' Club and The New Adventures of the Mad Scientists' Club.

Brinley published the short stories in these two books in the 1960's, but they are still very interesting adventures, particularly for young readers.
