Gene Wolfe:The Book of the New Sun

I found at used bookstore the second book in the series about Severian the Torturer by Gene Wolfe. They are part of series called The Book of the New Sun. I read all four of them years ago, and I loved them all. They are story of Severian the Torturer, who is at first an apprentice of the guild of torturers who perform executions and torture people found guilty of crimes. The storiues are in the very very distant future, and the earth returned to something like medieval times, except there are strange mutant animals and remnants of science but basically it is primitive. There are gruesome tortures and such so it is not for everyone but is well written and despite the cruelty and brutality it is still beautiful story in some ways. It is classified science fiction but seems more like a fantasy to me, which I usually hate but for some reason I enjoyed this one enough to read three times despite being very lengthy.

The Shadow of the Torturer
The Claw of the Conciliator
The Sword of the Lictor
The Citadel of the Autarch

and one that takes place years after :

The Urth of the New Sun

Thank you Libra for the information. I did not even know there was a fifth book. I read only first four, and will look for the urth of the new sun.
