Terrible Terry Allen - Gerald Astor
One of the best combat leaders of all time.
In WWII he was the commander of the Big Red One (First Infantry Division) in North Africa and Sicily then later commanded the 104th Infantry Division (The Timberwolves) in Europe.
So, why is this general who was a decorated veteran of two World Wars not very well known? Decorations include: Army distinguished Service Medal w/oak leave clusters, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, WWI Victory Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, France Legion of Honor, Russian Order of Suvorov, U.K.’s Order of the Bath
Why was this general who failed out at West Point so revered by the soldiers who served under him?
