Greensleeves

The melody was recycled for a lot of different lyrics. Greensleeves was one of the more popular versions. The melody was also used for some Christmas lyrics that became a popular carol. So the melody became associated with Christmas through lyrics that weren't the standard Greensleeves ones. Then it sort of doubled back, especially as Christmas became more of a secular holiday--the religiously neutral Greensleeves lyrics came back into popularity instead of the religious lyrics; but by then the melody was so associated with Christmas, the new/old Greensleeves version became a Christmas carol itself.

I have never heard it played here in Australia in the context of christmas music- and there is certainly nothing christmasy about the content of the song.

Thanks Eva. As always, you are a fountain of knowledge.

Fourx: I agree which is why I was wondering.
