Hello & about me

Faran

New Member
Hello. I am a 14 year old student located in Boston Massachusetts, though I am 100% Persian by heritage. My favorite authors are Ferdausi, Dostoevsky, Mohlavi, Tolstoy, and Homer.

How long has this forum existed, by the way?

Welcome Faran, I hope you have a nice time posting here. I'll be looking forward to reading some of your posts :)

Welcome to the boards, Faran. You'll find us a friendly bunch of booklovers!

Your taste in books is quite... heavy (contentwise). What are you reading just now?

Cheers, Martin :D

Thank you for the kind remarks.

Martin, right now I am reading Nabil's historical narrative, the Dawnbreakers which is a history of the Bahai Faith.

I am going to start the Brothers Karamazov of Dostoevsky shortly. I am very fond of Russian literature, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy obviously the epitome of this greatness.

Since the topic was brought up, what are you currently reading?

After your rather impressive current and next reads, I'm almost ashamed to say that I'm reading 'Blindness', by portugese Nobel prize winner Jose Saramago.

Good book, though!

Cheers, Martin :D

I have heard of the author of which you speak, but have never read him.

You shouldn't be ashamed though! The books I read tend to be very difficult reads for me, I am challenged by them, and thus I dont get a lot of books read in a given amount of time. And what is important is not what is written in a book, but how well one understands and interprets it, as I am sure you would agree. :)

Happy reading!

And you're 14 years old? ;)

Sheesh... I have a nephew that's 14. Reads comics. :p

Oh, and by the way, I, indeed, agree with you.

Cheers, Martin :D

Hey, im 22 and id still read comics if i wasnt so damn embarressed about having to take them up to the counter, honestly its worse than buying porn!! ;)

Incidentally Faran, i understand what you mean about having to fight your way through books - im still wrestling with Homer's Iliad after several weeks of trying i havnt got very far, keep being distracted by nice simple mass-market books instead!!

Edit: Duh!! Forgot to say hello, so - Hey Faran, Welcome to the Forums!! :)

Phil

People, I was kidding... I was just trying to get my point across. My point was this: Damn smart for a 14-year old! I'm impressed.

Cheers, Martin :D

Hey I'm one day younger than you and I still do from time to time

Comics are an art form in themselves- a series of still images on a page that the reader interprets in such a way that it fills in the blanks between them, and creates an atmosphere in his/her mind. If comics are trash culture per se- does that imply that any moron can create them? Factor in the art of dialogue that can be combined to the medium, and the intimacy of the panel, the expanse of the page. Anyone can paint, but only a few people can create what is considered by the vast majority of consumers as good/excellent.

There are things you can express in a comic that can't be expressed in a painting or a sculpture, in the same way that a sculpture cannot express the exact same things that a piece of music can.

Being argumentative ;)

Bunny, you are absolutely right. Forget I said that.

Comics rule; comics are the Homer, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky of our time.

Seriously, they are.

Cheers, Martin :D

(By the way, don't kill me, I was kidding yet again.)
