Many years ago (early 80's), I read this book and now I can't remember the title. It's fiction, set in Vietnam. The main character is a Major ( I believe, possibly Marine) attached to MACV-SOG or a similar unit; it's a joint effort between S. Vietnamese and US, each has personnel assigned there. He has a Viet Sgt. that's very helpful and dedicated, his Viet counter-part (Captain, Col. maybe) is not.
As I recall, the Major is trying to track down and capture one of the high-level VC cadre. At some point, he captures either the suspect or a sympathizer and ties him to a stake in the courtyard. He tapes a grenade to the VC's palm with the pin pulled and leaves him there to decide whether or not he should cooperate.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
