I recently (like back in January) read a good book called The Rover, by Mel Odom. Its basically a halfling who is a Librarian in a huge library called The Vault of All Known Knowledge. In this world, all books have either been destroyed or collected into this library, and nobody reads anymore..(the people of the world think the Vault is only a myth, and so no one goes to it). This book has lots of adventure, pirating, goblins and even dragons! Its funny, quick, and just good. Its not really a "kids" book, but they may enjoy it as well. This is the first in a trilogy.
