Just out of curiosity, what is the largest amount of money you have ever paid for a new book (not a set)? And what would be your limit?


I just paid $35 for "South With Endurance" and that was on sale down from $50. But I would probably have gone the full $50 if I had not found the sale because I really wanted to see the actual photographs taken by Frank Hurley from his expedition with Shakelton to Antartica.

So am I under your top figure, over it, or just Lost In Space? :cool:

My husband buys lots of technical books and they are usually about $50+. I hate to spend more than $10 on a new book:p , I actually usually buy my books used. I guess I am cheap:D !
 
For a "new" as in just published, I think $85.

My limit is being tested with a book coming out that is $150. I haven't decided whether to buy it yet or not.
 
My limit thus far is probably close to 200 bucks. My currency. The equivalent to your USD$60, but rest assured that it's very painful in my currency. :)
 
I am a publisher's worst nightmare. I buy almost all my books on sale or from the bargain bin. Most I've spent on a fiction book is probably around $25 CAD.

Ooh, and I'm really good at getting people to gift me books for birthdays and Christmas. :)

Same here, and I'm a maniac for secondhand bookstores too. I think the most I spent for a single book was $30 on Mad's Greatest Artists: Sergio Aragones. That was one I couldn't resist.
 
I paid $20 for a Harry Potter book but I've spent at a book store well over a $100 for about 15 paperbacks. This was when I was book crazy lol.
 
I think the most I have spent on a ,non text book, book was $40 for a very beautiful book of birds by the Audubon Society and it was half the cover price.

I buy everything used or on sale too, If I absolutely can't wait I check it out from the library :)

Yes, so do I. If I really love it and must have it on my shelf , then I'll wait for it to go on sale or to remainders before I buy it. For example, I read a library copy of Year of the Flood shortly after its release, then waited for it to go on sale and picked up a hard cover edition for $6.

I also use the library to check out authors or books that I'm not sure about. Gone Girl (among many others) is one book I'm glad I didn't purchase.

Plenty. It's the hunt that's the most fun though. This scene here is a small place. There's one that's a warehouse full, and I don't know where I stashed that photo now. That's crazy, people queueing up, jostling about and squeezing between other patrons in narrow aisles at 2am!!!
 
Those pictures...I'd have a truck backed up and be tossing books in as I went along, looks like a reader's paradise! I love book sales and used book stores. So many out of print books and unusual titles plus great prices of course. Back to the original question...if there is a new book I absolutely want I'll buy it or ask the library to get it. Barnes and Noble.com is good with discounting is you have their card.

As far as how much would I pay? There was a Lincoln book I debated about for months. I think the list price was $60. I was just about to finally break down and buy it when there was a miracle! It appeared on the used book shelf at the library for $2. I almost kissed the book...or the librarian...or something, but I was quite pleased to say the least.

There's a new Vanity Fair 100th Anniversary edition that's around $60 or $70, that's probably my limit.
