I Love You (poem)

You taught me it's prideful to be happy
You taught me it's shameful to be sad
You taught me it's immoral to be angry
And sickening to be glad

You hammered my faults
You hated my streangths
You belittled my triumphs
You decried my mistakes

You said it was for my own good,
Because you loved me

So I buried my feelings
I did what you want
It never stopped the hurting
It hid it from you...
And me

Now I cannot find my feelings
Though I know they exist
All that's left is a longing
And a great abyss

To fill the void I needed something
So I took on your pain
I am happy when you laugh
I am sad when you cry
Your sorrows are my sorrows
Your needs greater than mine
No matter what you did I don't condemn you
No matter what you said, I love you

But somewhere within
There is a deep, abiding pain
Which is worse, loving the one you hate
Or hating the one you love
Or doing both
Without feeling any love
Or hate
Or pain...

I love you
