    Inferno 42

    There's a place, not far
from the Crossroads of the World
    half a block

    maybe
    between seventh and eighth
    on forty second
    a huge cavern
    four stories deep, maybe six
kept from collapsing by huge steel beams
    in all directions
    completely underground
    with escalators
    angling upward downward
    all directions
    connecting all levels,
    and people,
    people coming people going
    from level to level
    suddenly descending
    past your shoulder
    more sharply angled
    down toward lower levels
    as if in a hurry
    but no
    the same mechanical speed
    matching stolid
    to your stolid
    while you go forward
    toward middling level
    and then
    some rise
    right out of nowhere
    up toward
    the heights above
    right on past
    your forward gaze,
    The People of Earth
always down there out of sight
    in maelstrom
    never at
    The Crossroads of the World
so near and yet so far
    away.

    really cool!

I like everything about it, and, most of all, the imagery used. The descriptions are uncanny. And what an imagination!

give yourself a pat on the back... I read it 4 times! It was a pleasant surprise, to say the least.

    Stigmaticman,

I am completely overwhelmed by you appreciation. I don't think I have ever received such praise for anything in my life.
And thank you so much for rereading it.
    Many, many many thanks.
