picked up a sci-fi fantasy book in the library a few years ago (5+). 'Twas a weighty tomb (being the only kind I generally read wanting value for money in the form of more words per volume after lugging them home) but put it back on the shelf in lieu of other books that grabbed my fancy more at the time and have never been back to get it out. I moved!
The opening pages (which I always peruse in an attempt to choose) featured a wizardly battle with the elements. Something about a cave and storms and lightening is all I remember.
Does this ring any bells for any one? It was part of a series, that much I remember, and it was sitting on the bottom shelf facing the check out desk which put in the beginning part of the alphabet for the author. "Z" was way in the back.
