John Adams: Risk

Perhaps you could write a bit about it, give a review, or even just give a sentence about the primary topic.

Threads like this hardly tempt others to give the book a read. Initiate a discussion and maybe someone will end up interested enough to read it!

Yes, I quite appreciate your point, but it wasn't an ill-considered ploy. It's about risk analysis, and society's attitude to risk. Adams is Professor of Geography at UCL, and specialises in risk analysis in general, and road safety in particular.
However, much of the book is counter intuitive, so I'm quite deliberately trying to avoid being drawn into an argument with people who have not read it. The reason I sought out this forum was in the hope of finding people who have read some of the books that I have, and are interested in an open minded debate about the issues that arise from them. Past attempts at this on other fora have just resulted in me transcribing the book onto the forum one paragraph at a time, for the benefit of people who can't be bothered to read the book for themselves, in an attempt to answer points that have already been adequately dealt with by the author.

Ah. I see. Well, I'd suggest giving us a shot here first. I took a quick look at a couple of the books you've asked about, and I think that some of our members here might actually be interested in them. We have a few, very vocal members who love non-fiction and enjoy discussing and debating different topics. I think that by posting a bit more you might interest them in reading the books you enjoy!

As there have been no takers, I assume that nobody has already read it. I mentioned above, it's about risk analysis and society's attitude to risk. Sometimes I think it should be a criminal offence to contribute to a public debate without reading it first. Read it if you're interested to find out:-

Why risk management manuals falsely presume that risk is both undesirable and avoidable.

Why economists must presume that you have no right to an unpolluted environment.

Why scientific evidence rarely settles risk debates.

Why risk can't be measured objectively.

Why the more dangerous roads have fewer fatalities.

Why pedestrian and cyclist fatalities rise after seatbelts are made compulsory.

Why insurance increases your risk of an accident.

Why accidents rise in the surrounding area after safety improvements to an accident black spot.

Why fatality statistics for a junction can fall by over 50% without any safety modifications.

Why injury statistics are a measure of police staffing levels, and not the number of injuries.
