Micheal Tolkin: Among The Dead

Okay, so here's a wierd thing, I'm reading the above said book and suddenly, in between chapter 3 and 4, there's chapter 2 all over again. The page numbers still run on normally, so there must have been a major mix-up at the publishers' or whatever. I thought this quaint, but seeing as it was a good book, I just skipped the double-up and read on at chapter 3. Here's my problem: I think the book might have ended too soon in my copy! My copy ends with Frank having a bad dream and I have no way of knowing if it's supposed to be a really open ending or if the end of the book has been cut off because of the same trouble that caused a double chapter 2!

Could someone who is familiar with this book please tell me how their copy ends, I would be very gratefull.

You might be able to find out if your book is missing the ending by doing a search on Amazon.

Look for your version of the book - i.e. paperback or hardcover and publishing date. The description usually tells you the number of pages in the book - et voila - you'll see if it matches your copy.
 
And if you bought the book, I'd just go back to the store you got it from, and kindly demand a new copy. I had a similar problem once with a dictionary, and they gave me a new one immediately.

Aha, but you see, I bought the book second-hand, so I can't exchange it (I could get my money back but, hey, E0,25 just isn't worth the trip;) ) and the copy I have is out of print, so I can't check on amazon or anywhere else on the net.

I wish I could just walk into a bookshop or library and check the book on it's ending, but seeing as I live in the Netherlands and it's an english book, I'd have to order it. Problems, problems. This is why I'm really looking for someone who has read the book and can tell me the ending.
 
Yes, I can see how that would be a problem.

Let's see: the title in Dutch is --surprisingly-- "Onder de doden", so you might find that one at a local library? I know it's not much fun switching languages in the middle of a book, but yours truly is a strange case. :)

I looked it up at my local library, and they have a copy of "Among the Dead" there -- if you still haven't figured it out by Saturday (that's when I'll be going there), I can go get the book, if that helps? I could type up the last paragraphs or something, so you could compare the two.

Thanks for the offer! Wow that is so sweet! I won't ask you to take it out for me because I haven't even been to the library myself to look.

You are very right; the dutch version of the book probably is available. It was very, very stupid of me not to think of the fact that the book has probably been translated, especcially (and this is where you understand how truly stupid I am) since I am studying to be an english-dutch translator myself.

Oh, and Lies, now that I have learn't that you are flemish I now suddenly realise your name isn't the plural of lie, but an abbreviation of Elisabeth. Do you think we are the only dutch-language people on the forum?

I'm pretty sure we're not the only ones: there are a few Belgians here (both French and Dutch), and quite a few people from the Netherlands as well, though I'm not sure they post here that often.

If you can't find the book at the library: the offer still stands. I love going about things in an as roundabout way as possible, so this would be just my thing ;)

(btw-- Is that fun, studying for translator? I thought about doing it myself, but I gave up the idea after a year of Germanic Filology; somehow it's just not for me.)
 
I'm relatively sure you are not the only two Dutch-speaking members of this here great site. I know this because I suspect myself of being one. Not sure though...

Yes, it turns out I'm also very Dutch, and have been so for my entire life. Who would've guessed (besides my mum)?

Ooh, and by the way, I'm a second year student of the English Language & Culture, and I'm also pondering specialising in translating... Suddenly a very annoying Disney-song about the world being as small as it is comes to mind (Great, now I'll be humming that tune all week!)

Hello there.

Just writing to say that when I finally got round to it I did go to the library and I did find the dutch translation and it did, in fact, correspond to the ending I had in my english version. I still think it was a very strange ending though, so I don't think it was silly of me to suspect that my copy was missing a few pages.
