Seems like this should be a bigger deal. It wasn't on the home page of any of the news sites I visit regularly.

In my experiences and in conversation with other readers I think the National Book Award is sort of....irrelevant. I have unintentionally read several of the winners and didn't realize until later that they won the award. Some of them I liked and some I didn't. It has got to be hard to judge because "loving" a book is such a subjective thing.
But to the point of your post, it probably didn't get much press because our society doesn't read a whole heck of a lot anymore. Unless Twilight or the Hunger Games are nominated no one cares.
