This is a real longshot since I don't remember a whole lot about this book. I would have read it in the late 70s or early 80s, but I don't know if it was older than that.
I remember it had several kids in it, brothers and sisters or maybe cousins, and it seems like the kids were sent to live in the country. I think it may have been because of WWII, but I may just be confusing that with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I remember it was winter. There was an old shed or barn on the property and there was someone living in it. The kids were afraid of this person, they thought it was a ghost. There was a dog in the book, maybe an Irish Setter.
