I got this book about a year ago, and I really liked it. I absolutely loved the way Skye uses words - his descriptions of everything around the characters are so interesting. And I usually hate scenery in books. Sadly, my local library doesn't have book 2 in yet, and I just bought some other books, so I can't bring myself to buy it just now. I don't know of anything else by Skye either. But I hear Fablehaven, by Brandon Mull, is pretty good.
