I'm thinking of reading this in the near future. Is it worth reading or is Gibbons' Rise and Fall... still considered the most authoritative?

Read this one last year. I thought it provided a reasonable overview of the Roman republic though it does turn out to be a bit of a dry read in places (but then again I've always preferred reading about tyrants and conquerors eg Sulla rather than philosophers and great thinkers).

I'm about 2 chapters into this one, its a lot less dry than Gibbons, I'm ashamed to say I gave up on that very quickly. It hasn't exactly grabbed me yet, but its early days, I'll let you know how I get on.
