Russian Travel Writer?

I'm trying to remember a book and its author --- the book was reviewed by John Updike (enthusiastically, as I remember) in a 2003 issue of The New Yorker. The book was a series of travel pieces about dangerous/poor/chaotic places, and the author, I believe, was Russian. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
