    Sacred Rite

They come from all over slowly

    ones and threes converging

    getting thicker slowly determinedly

as if candle bearing they might

    but aren't thoughtfully trudging

    reverently striding forcefully solitary

    or sharing with companions

    pleasantries greetings news

    of the day children's school

    drawings focused on their

    thoughts or worries hopes

    despair wishing content angry

    for more or termination

    here and now for evermore

to stand in lines of knots of

    individuals calmly all sorts

not arguing not jostling each other

drifting in their own reflecting space

    for once a peaceable humanity

forward to the table then the booth

to pull the lever in reverence

or give a yank let them know

or register hope for a future

    with personal meaning and then

    dispersing fanning out through an

exit back to life humdrum or

    exciting feeling holding hoarding

    one's own flame of knowing

    one has participated again

    in the solemn Rite

    of Election.
