Anyone know any good novels that deal with searching for god? Preferably something literal, like the following of the monoliths in 2001: A Space Odyssey or, if any of you play video games, xenogears.
 
I don't know if this is what you're looking for or not but it sure is interesting: the third volume in the trilogy His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
