Over the past few months I have been working my way through Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell and the novels by Bukowski (Factotum, Ham on Rye etc, Women I am really enjoying this gritty style of writing. I was wondering if anyone else could recommend some books along similar lines. I have already been looking to get In the Misou Soup by Ryū Murakami which I have heard is brilliant, any other suggestions?

I loved all Bukowski's novels except Women. Try some more, and his short stories are great too. John Fante 'Ask the Dust' I loved but not so much his others.

His son Dan Fante I enjoyed more. Hubert Selby jnr - Last Exit to Brooklyn.

All very direct writers who tell a great story.

Yeah I had "Ask the Dust" added to my wish-list on amazon thought it sounded interesting :) has anyone read The Brotherhood of the Grape by fante? thought that sounded pretty interesting, also has anyone read The Willow Tree by Hubert Selby Jr. I thought that sounded pretty interesting as well.
