Speaking 2 languages may delay getting Alzheimer's

Lakota? Impressive. How'd you learn that in Australia?

In Australia, yes...Many of us begin life elsewhere...

My father (who is Danish) is a professor of linguistic anthropology and spent several years in the US as a young man studying Native American languages where he worked closely with a young female anthropologist who specialised in the Siouan languages of Absarokee and Lakota. The young lady, and her family, happened to be of the Hunkpapa (Lakota)...and my mother. They fell in love, married, made their home base in Denmark, which is where I was born...I came to Australia as a teenager when my father was conducting a study of aboriginal languages. I stayed in Australia, becoming a citizen, when my parents' professions took them to other corners of the globe.

So you see, not so impressive after all. ;)

Now it is off to work for the night shift for me.

I was walking back from lunch with an Ethiopian colleague and we were talking about being multilingual.

Her: What do you call someone who speaks three languages?

Me: Trilingual.

Her: What do you call someone who speaks two languages?

Me: Bilingual.

Her: What do you call someone who speaks only one language? An American.
