"The Caretaker" - Juvenile Fiction

I wanted to share this book with a friend of mine but it's old and out of print I'm sure All I remember is that it's about kids in a world without color and in the end they somehow escape and experience color.

It's a wonderful book and if anyone even knows the author that would be great!

I've looked all over the internet and haven't been able to find anything.

The only thing I can think of is "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. One child escapes the community and experiences colour for the first time, but it's not out of print. Don't think I'm right here, but I tried!
