This may sound like an odd request: Look at Chapter VIII, The House of Healing, the 10th paragraph from the end of the chapter, after Gandalph and Aragorn leave the room, and Pippin is speaking to Merry about his pack, and Pippin starts "My dear..."

My request is this: can anyone type here what pippin SAYS to merry here?

My dear ass, your pack is lying by your bed, and you had it on your back when I met you. He saw it all the time, of course. And anyway I have some stuff of my own. Come on now! Longbottom Leaf it is. Fill up while I run and see about some food. And then let's be easy for a bit. Dear me! We Tooks and Brandybucks, we can't live long on the heights.

An "ass" is another name for a donkey (so I assume in this context the are referring to a pack animal)

I thought of that, but unless I'm mistaken, this is the ONLY place it's used in the entire series.

It's HarperCollins. And yes, I think it means idiot or a.....e.
