I am very pleased with this new Bruce Sterling offering. He has reached a new level of character development while weaving his politics more keenly into the story. He correctly identifies 9/11/2001 as a turning point in the US in terms of economics as well as security and shines a light on the tenuous existence of the Internet in terms of the War on Terror. In Derek Vandeveer, Sterling perfects the nerd/geek as hero, who at the end of his transformation into a CyberWarrior tells a friend, "hope isn't a feeling, Jimmy ... it's a faith that what we do has meaning." That the geek is married to an equally well-drawn heroine is the icing on this cake.
Light satire and minor thrills allow him to comment on politics and the dot-com business collapse with authority.
