Trying to identify book prior to 1945

My friend and her sister, born in 1945, were named after characters in a book her dad read who were twins, Charlene & Darlene. Is there any place where people specialize in older books and could maybe identify it for me. I would love to surprise her with it. Thanks!!

Any idea at all what kind of book it might be? Genre, adult/children, etc?

Not one clue. We are assuming it would be an adult novel of some kind in those days.
