VOTE for The Book Forum Top 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy List

Prolixic

kickbox
The idea is simple: To poll the memebers of The Book Forum who read Science Fiction and Fantasy to find out what the best books in those genre are.

To vote for your favorite all time Sciene Fiction or Fantasy books please abide by the following guidelines in your posts:

  • Vote for either Science Fiction books or Fantasy books or both
  • No limit
  • No duplicates
  • For each book please post EXACTLY like this Author (First Name MI Last Name -Book Title-Ranking (no fractions) For example: Robert A. Heinlein - The Moon is a Harsh Mistress - 10 (On a scale of 1-10 ten being the best one the worst) yes its important to use dashes only
  • When rating books please use whole number increments only.
  • No discussion, votes only please...there are plenty of "What's the best book ever?" threads
  • Vote for stand alone books or series
  • No deadline. We'll tabulate the results and update the list periodically
  • To avoid chaos, kindly use publishers choice of genre.

Note: Some of us got together and worked up these guidelines here: Top 100 Thread if you want some background. Personally, I think we can to a better because we actually READ the BOOKS.

EDIT Jan 03, 2005: As for genre it was discussed, though I left it out of the guidelines, that we'd pretty well have to abide by the publishers decision otherwise it would degenerate into a humongous argument.

EDIT Jan 06, 2005: Regarding the rating system please use whole numbers only. Fractions, decimals and other partial points will be rounded off. (Didn't think of that one)

But Atwood's books aren't SF ;)

Not sure whether to list horror as it overlaps with fantasy. What about comics? Am I going to skew the ratings up? I tend not to give 10s, while my recommended list comes from my 8s and 9s.

Anyway, I'm going to have to come back to this with more (as you've pretty much said list every sf/f book you've ever read), but may as well get started:

I hate lists (but love reading them) due to all the different categories of rating something. Tolkien's world has more depth than any other in fantasy and I think it's fair to say that without him the genre would look a fair bit different so I gave him the highest rating. However, I also think it safe to say (with no disrespect); many writers do a much better job of portraying fully developed characters.

How can you compare The Sword in the Stone to Mists of Avalon or The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings? Oh well, there's a list of some of the fantasy books I've read over the years and a half-assed attempt at rating them.

PS: Does Louis L'Amour count as fantasy :)?

EDIT: Didn't read the directions very well.

Changed title of thread

Prolixic, I've changed the title of this thread to include the word "VOTE".

That way, you can post the actual TBF Top 100 list in a separate thread which I can also 'stick'.

It is taking forever to edit this data. Sorry gang.

Here's the problem: There can't be much variation in how its posted up or it has to be edited by hand.

For example:
Robert Heinlein - Friday - 8
Robert A. Heinlein - Friday - 9
Heinlein, Robert A. - Friday - 10
Heinlein, Robert - Friday - 9
Heinlein - Friday - 7

are all the same author, book, and score. Now imagine not only a couple a hundred of these, but imagine them all separated by colons, dashes, commas and the like. It enough to give a data import function a migraine and me carpal tunnel.

So close to 1000 you can tastes it...
