W. Somerset Maugham: The Moon And Sixpence

I just finished reading W. Somerset Maugham's The Moon and Sixpence. Not necessarily his best book, but still extremely enjoyable. Whenever I read one of Maugham's books, I always marvel at his ability to sketch living breathing characters in a few sentences and I always enjoy his observations, pithy if often cynical, on the human condition.

I was wondering where the title comes from. It doesn't appear anywhere in te text. Can anyone enlighten me?
