i read this book around the late 80's early 90's. it was about a woman i think her name was Jan and her daughter who went to live in a jungle with the womans new husband. they get lost and eventually her husband killed her daughter - he turn from a nice guy to a sadistic abuser. her nearest landmark is san christobel - i think its set in peru but i am not sure - i think the book is called Alive - she is american
