Whatever Works; Woody Allen

Absolutely loved it, the cantankerous lead actor was a riot. Yes, it has the typical Woody Allen dysfunctional elements in it which are by now, rather common and predictable, but this one was pretty good compared to the last series of movies he has made in the last ten years.

How did you feel about What's Up, Tiger Lily?

It's his greatest departure from making "Woody Allen" movies, and his most entertaining.
Mighty Aphrodite was good, but it's SUCH a Woody Allen movie.

I get that a lot of pros do their best work when they're older - filmmakers and architects spring to mind. But if he hung it up fifteen years ago, it would be alright.
[cough]Jay Leno[/cough]

I also feel like folks of his generation refuse to just go away and make way for younger talent with a perspective that hasn't been seen for decades on end.

A huge exception to this rule is Clint Eastwood, who awesomely departed from super-formulaic tough-guy movies to the first movie where he played a human being in Unforgiven, then busted out six movies straight from 2004 to present that are all about being human beings, and not macho caricatures.
