A spoiler is what we call information that when revealed may take away the fun of the subject in question and thus remove the impetus to continue pursuing the subject, i.e. spoiling the fun.
You encase spoilers in spoiler tags so that people will not unwittingly stumble upon something that they'd rather not know about.
For example, we'd encase the following information with spoiler tags for those of us who cannot take the truth about Santa Claus:
To read spoilers just highlight the black text with your mouse and the words should show up.
