Forum shenanigans

Forum friends are not like actual friends insofar that I haven't met most of them. When meetings have occurred they have been good, common ground being the reason for the mix. The other main forums I'm a part of are a bit weird at the moment, one having lost it's writer the other (a digital arts website) being compromised by a never ending sub standard beta that no other member likes.

I'm on a forum related trip today and I'll be meeting a fellow forumite for a pint.

I wasn't talking about turmoil.

Besides, shenanigans doesn't have to be orchestrated by a group of people.

Very true, often times, "orchestration" is nothing more than a personality tick of always having to have the last word, badgering new members about their interests, causing them to ultimately leave, or either them or another member saying "I'm done" after simply refusing to let things go....again.....having to have the last word. It's easy to ignore though, like the annoying chihuahua that barks at you. On those forums, I stay on the given subject mostly, due to the fact the "trouble" members can't swim in the substance of a good discussion.

I've seen the same thing with moderators who get overly involved and argumentative with members, as opposed to trying to play the role of OCCASIONAL conversation starters/continuers and referee. Those forums are a kick for me though, it's usually two or three moderators and no one else in a thread-key sign that something is wrong.

That's not what I meant by orchestration. I meant several members being in on a joke.

I'm on a forum like that.

I think a little shenanigans does a forum good :) I know in the past there have been hard feelings here about them but also feel BAR could use some spicing up.

It seems only a handful of regular posters are here lately and maybe y'all like it quiet and small? But if you are thinking it would be nice to have more members and more conversations, you're gonna have to loosen the reigns a bit ;)

Maybe this would be a good place to discuss what you want to see more of and what perimeters you'd like established?

1. My impression is that regular posters have been drifting away (meaning long-term members with whom I was once in regular communication), while I see new names flooding in.
2. I don't think that generating hard feelings is ever a good idea if you wish to have repeat business. Businesses I know try for good feelings, and try hard, if they wish to remain in business long.
3. I think the forum absolutely reflects the personalities and attitudes of the moderators. The forum will be whatever they want it to be, even if less and less about books.
4. I am one of those drifting further and further away as my balance of interests shifts more toward personal real life activities.

Actually the only thing I see any mods exert tight control over is spam and self promotion. This is one of the least moderated forums I have ever been on - in a good way.

That is also partly the responsibility of members to participate in discussions about books, but there is that old saying about you can take a horse to water ....

It is the nature of any group to see a gradual turn over of members. People lose interest for any number of reasons - time, new interests, other interests, other commitments - and new people come in. This isn't a bad thing at all.

That is true now, way back when I was a regular, not so much so. And I am not trying to poke a hornets nest, I just was pointing out that this used to be a much different place and when it changed certain people like myself left and certain people stayed. The mood now is completely different and I was wondering if everyone is happy with it, or wanted change? And what kind of changes? A little more Tom Foolery might be good or might be bad, depending on how the regular members view it and I thought this was as good a place as any to discuss it.

I don't think the moderators have as much influence on the tone of a forum as the regular posters do, but here it seems it is mostly one and the same at the moment. I know there's new higher ups and thought possibly there was room for some growth, now would be the time to start shaping it into what kind of forum this will be.
