You now feel really old

Dear G-d dear philosophers, lighten up...I think the thing about aging is that on the inside we stay in a certain age...I myself probably peaked at 25. Even when those first steps out of the car and across the parking lot require certain joints to unlock, the knees to loosen up a bit...ah, that's better...inside we still know we're still 25, younger than those blue haired geezers blocking the supermarket aisle...hopefully...but yeah it is a state of mind. It's freeing though...the outspoken sometimes grow introspective, those of us who were rather mouse-like learn to stand up for our ideals.

Well I kind of hope I'm not stuck at 25 - I sort of didn't know much back then. I prefer to say the fundamental 'me-ness' doesn't change. I am just me. I just learn more as I go.

I say 25 because I still was optimistic and young...one kid and one on the way and the whole world ahead of me. Then my Mum passed a year later and I aged another twenty years instantly. Now it's about falling apart gracefully...when the wife has to carry me up the stairs I'll be ready to go

It will all come soon enough. Sooner for some than others. Probably too soon for most.

Whilst that is true - its somehow horribly horrifying

Just goes to show how different life experiences are - at 25 I knew nothing, was a total mess and I have no desire to go back there. Here where I am now is a good place. I've learnt some things, dealt with some things and look forward to learning more.

That sounds to me like a prescription for an optimistic ever-young view of life. Or am I missing something?

Quite possibly although I never thought of it particularly in those terms, but I do think a recipe for being old is to give up learning, and no matter how much you know, there is always more to learn.

Agreed, definitely. The years ahead can be viewed as all "opportunity" -- for whatever appeals to one. :)

The best time to find out exactly what appeals to one, and/or pursue interests that fell by the wayside in the pursuit of 'career'.

My Dad is incredible with his outlook on life. At 91 he still has a busier schedule than people a quarter his age. A lifelong conservative transforms to a liberal...it's amazing. Funny too when he grouses about the "doddery seniors" he has to walk behind on tours. Even after a bypass some years ago he can run circles around most of us.

I admire his attitude though. He really is the person to turn to for wisdom. If you ask him for advice he'll give it to you straight up...after a century of living you don't have to mince words anymore. Just amusing, he's not someone I would have imagined hugging trees. However my brother picked up the cause...from burning his draft card to Rush. Needless to say we don't talk so much anymore.

Do some of the rest of you have family that has done a complete turnaround in maturity?
