    Fantasy book suggestions?

Stephen R. Donaldson For what you're looking for I would highly suggest either the Thomas Covenant Trilogies... or the two books of Mordant's Need. Both sets of books are by Stephen R. Donaldson. Both contain magic... summonings... and non-magic fighting (between knights of a sort although...

    Thoughts on Alas, Babylon

I love Alas, Babylon completely and totaly. I've read it probably 5 or 6 times and it never gets old. Another post-apocalyptic book you might want to check out is Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany. However, be warned, this book is VERY odd and doesn't really have what you'd call a "traditional...

    Tad Williams

I've never read Memory but i have read the two books in Otherland. Otherland is a strange mix of sci/fi and fantasy. I say strange, not because of what is mixed together, but because of how it's mixed together. It's mostly sci/fi for the first 3/4 of the first book. Williams then uses...

    A cliched genre? Discuss

I agree with this. However, I, like you, read both genres. In fact, i read almost every genre there is. The only genres I haven't found a liking for so far are romance and westerns. Notice I say "so far," I'm always willing to read books from any genre. I don't always like them all, but how...

    just read a great book

i just read a fantastic sci/fi book by Nick Sagan called Idlewild... it's his first novel (although he's been a screenwriter for 10 years) and i think that he has promise as a very very good sci/fi writer. His second book is a sequel to idlewild called Edenborn... i have yet to read that book...

    Intelligent sci-fi

I've read the Rama series, Dune series, and Cryptonomicon. I whole heartedly agree with you Oberon that these are very good "intelligent sci/fi" books.

What next to read in Sci-Fi?

if you like epic sci/fi than i would try the Rama series by Arthur C. Clark... it's very good and a "high" sci/fi series

    Need a new VAMPIRE book

you should try "I Am Dracula" by C. Dean Andersson... this is a version of Dracula that i found very interesting... it's written from the perspective of vlad the impaler himself and is sort of an autobiography... very entertaining and a quick read
