    Umberto Eco

I love Umberto Eco, but he takes himself very seriously. In the Postscript to The name of the Rose, he claims to design is books for the ideal reader. That is why he begins his books by long learned introductions designed to lose the non ideal reader along the way (however I find his elitism...

    Now Reading

I am reading "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown. I read "The DaVinci Code", from the same author and featuring the same main protagonist, a while ago.

    Currently Reading

I have finished "carrion comfort" by Dan Simmons (horror/ sci-fi), I liked it at first, but then I got bored, it was much too long... I am currently reading "Women of the Silk" by Gail Tsukiyama, a novel about a chinese girl who is "sold" by her family to a silk factory. I have read only...

    Boom!

"The Stand" from Stephen King is my favorite post-apocalyptic book, though not very realistic. I must say I haven't read many, though I like them. I also like post-apocalyptic movies like Terminator or pre-apocalyptic movies like Armageddon or Deep Impact... I recently read "Alas, Babylon" from...

Wanted: Arturo Perez Reverte Fans to start an online fanclub.

Well, everything about Alexandre Dumas was absent from the movie, and the main originality of the book was its double plot... The whole thing seemed like a pretext for Polanski to give a big part to his wife, Emmanuelle Seigner... I like Perez-Reverte a lot: I loved Club Dumas and the Flanders...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

I am confused too. In my edition, the appendix features the tale of Aragorn and Arwen. Arwen doesn't go West but goes to alone to the land of Lorien: "she laid herself to rest upon Cerin Amroth; and there is her green grave". So it is clear she dies there (after Aragorn has died). A little above...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

I had the same feeling than Dawn, I think they are dying. We are in Middle Earth, so the passage from life to death is bound to be something more symbolic than simply dying (not true for those who died in battle though). They sail away and if I am not mistaken that's how the passage from life...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

... Maybe Tolkien wanted to show that there was someone, in Middle-earth, who, though very powerful, was not interested in power and was above other "human" (in the large sense, including elves, or other creatures of Middle-earth) preoccupations, a kind of "mystic" poet, interested only in...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

I've finished reading the 3 volumes, I felt like moving on to something else at times (mostly while reading the Two Towers), but I'm happy I didn't: it paid off... I really enjoyed it on the whole. I felt that the Two Towers was not so good as the Fellowship and the Return of the King, I wonder...

What other hobbies do you enjoy?

Great to see there are other "Monks" fans out there, Jessica! In fact there at too many good TV series and it interferes with my reading;). I thought 24 would be a one season series and here I am, already hooked to the second season... I also love watching reruns of "Keeping up appearances"...
