Well, the main reason for a lack of female classics is because of role women had in society through much of history. But I sort of agree with you here and I do prefer male writers to female writers, though that may just be because I am a guy.
The New Testament is only the book I've read more than once, but there are plenty of books I'd like to read again, but my to-be-read pile is ever-growing so I never have the time.

Anway, I would say that the such a canon does indeed exist but rather just as an era or another evolution of the western canon.
Whoa, that article is pretty harsh. I agree with your thoughts on James Frey though, what does it matter if its embellished? Why ruin a good story with truth, after all.
The way every novel must have some new great schematic structure and the way every chapter must be named after a saint and begin with an obscure quotation. The constant and often pointless and obscure wordplay found in some texts is also a bit irritating, as well as the poor attempts at stream...
If you're looking for super long I recommend In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust and The Man without Qualities by Robert Musil. I've also heard good things about Joseph and his brothers by Thomas Mann, which is very long.
