David Eddings Belgarion series is really good i read thm at about the same age as your brother they weer great far better than his more recent series.

I loved this series and read them faithfully until the last 3 came out and they just werent as good as the previous books.

Try Kay Hooper those are good if its vampires i'd go for Laurell K Hamilton. Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan combine vampires with a bit of romance/eroticness

have you read terry goodkind? i quite liked his books but then again i liked david eddings especially the redemption of althalus, belgariod and mallorean but not so much his later works which seem have a similar sort of storyline.
