Happy New Year! So go and read a book you otherwise wouldn't have!

A little quiet around here, isn't it? Hmm...

A very happy new year to every one! So since I had to write this thread in 2012 (2nd Jan, no less), I want to ask you all to find a book you'd otherwise not read, and read it this year.

Since that can be quite difficult, I will make it easier for you. Read a book from a Malaysian author, or a book that has the word 'Malaysia' in it. There.

Lillian Too doesn't count, btw.

Happy New Year's Day to you as well D. I have taken your advice to heart on a whim, as I read one book that I normally wouldn't have and I'm about to start on another. As for Malaysia, I'm afraid I'll have to work on that.

I heartily recommend The Rice Mother by Rani Manecka:whistling:

Who else would you recommend for Malayasia, DS?

PS: While I love Jack Finney's time travel stories, I would not have pegged Assault on a Queen as something I would like. Good thing I took my husband's advice and read it anyway. Now I want to see if I can find the film based on the book..(Excellent advice, this thread.. looking forward to seeing more suggestions here.)

Ok, a few that I've thought of:

The Harmony Silk Factory, Tash Aw
Map of the Invisible World, Tash Aw
The Gift of Rain, Tan Twan Eng
Evening is the Whole Day, Preeta Samarasan

Getting some 'acquaintances' to recommend more.

As for books that mention Malaysia:
Net Force, Tom Clancy
2666, Roberto Bolano
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Mark Haddon
The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien (just kidding)

Quite a few, actually, but I only remember these few.

What, already read it and the year hasn't even begun yet? That's uncool. Now read another book from the list.

:)

Well I read it in 2009... I'm not sure if I'll be reading anything else from that list but who knows? The year is still young!

I actually have the first two above on the shelf TBR, but managed about 500-odd pages of 2666 before I threw the towel in on it.
Just couldn't go on.

BG, I read and loved A Town Like Alice when I was a teenager, and loved it. Tried a reread a few years ago, and it just seemed to fall a bit flat and dated, and not in a good way.

Happy belated new year! I started reading the Ender series because getting a flu also got me the time for it :)

Ok, some feedback from people smarter and wider-read than myself. More Malaysian works!

A Malaysian Journey, Rehman Rashid
Rojak, Amir Muhammad
Days of Change, Chuah Guat Eng
Ripples, Kow Shih-Li (short story collection)
Malaysian Tales, edited by Daphne Lee

Ripples was very highly recommended. And Malaysian Tales is a collection of classic Malaysian fables, which is just so... grassroots. :)

I'm going to go book-shopping again, apparently. :)

I have found a book with the word 'Malaysia' in it. It's on page 347, second line from the bottom. I will read it in November.

^ What is the book?

I bought And the Rain My Drink today.

Yeah, I too, want to know. :)

Also, I just remembered that Hellboy, the comic series turned feature film phenomenon, featured a hantu penunggu from Malaysia in one of the books. Don't know which one, though (the books, I mean, not the ghost).

Reading Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, by Le Carre.

Now this I like. Not only does he refer to Malaysia, he does so with some historical context (Malaya, which was what the peninsula was called prior to our independence from the British), and also refers to Penang and Kuala Lumpur. Even more impressive, he refers to Kuala Lumpur as KL without so much as a preamble, and I really liked that.

This guy knows his stuff.
